Local NDP officials spent Saturday soliciting signatures for a petition against on the new Champlain bridge.
Brossard-La Prairie MP Hoang Mai, who is leading the charge against the idea of forcing motorists to pay to cross the bridge, said that opposition is widespread to placing tolls on the new span.
Mai, who describes the toll decision as "underhanded," also notes that the Harper Conservatives failed to consult before making the decision to force payment to cross the span that will replace the busiest bridge in Canada.
Prime Minister Harper told reporters in Montreal this week that there was no chance that his government would change its policy on the tolls.
The span that will be built to replace the Champlain Bridge is expected to be completed by 2018 and should cost up to $5 billion.
