More fodder for baseball-hungry fans: a new study lists Montreal as the top candidate for a future MLB relocation or franchise.
Montreal scored ahead of Las Vegas, Hartford and Virginia Beach-Norfolk in the study by the American City Business Journals.
The study noted that the Montreal area ranks 16 out of 83 sports markets in Canada-United States with its estimated 3.9 million residents. A new team would have a relative lack of competition for the local sports buck with the Impact and Canadiens being the only existing teams in major international sports leagues.
The study gave Montreal a total of 81 points on its scale but Montreal proved to be an even better candidate for NFL and NBA franchises, as it scored a full 100 points as a candidate for teams in football and basketball.
The same study did not smile upon a Quebec City NHL candidacy, granting the city an "inadequate" 68 points, well behind cities ranked at 100, which were Albany, Austin, Birmingham, Cape Coral-Fort Myers, Grand Rapids, Harrisburg, Hartford, Houston, Las Vegas, Orlando, Richmond, Rochester, N.Y., Sacramento, Tulsa and Virginia Beach-Norfolk.
