A convicted mobster whose wife has been found guilty of the first degree murder of their children has died under mysterious circumstances.
Giuseppe De Vito, who is serving a 15-year sentence for drug trafficking, was found unconscious in his cell on Sunday evening.
He was rushed to hospital but could not be revived.
The Surete du Quebec says it does not yet have an explanation for the death and will investigate all possibilities.
De Vito spent four years in hiding starting in 2006 when he escaped a police raid on the Mafia. He was arrested at a gym in Laval in 2010, and soon after charged and convicted of drug trafficking.
De Vito and his wife Adele Sorella officially separated in 2008, during his second year on the lam, and in 2009 she killed their two children inside a hyperbaric chamber.
In June a jury found Sorella guilty of two counts of first-degree murder, a crime which carries an automatic life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years.
