The City of Montreal has extended the deadline to obtain a special pit bull permit.

Owners of pit bull-type dogs now have until March 31 to register them - and then two months after that to gather documents they need to obtain the actual special permit for pit bulls.

All permits must be in place by June 1.

Under the city's new animal control bylaw, owners had until the end of Dec. 2016, but because of court proceedings that caused delays the city decided to grant a three-month extension.

It costs $150 to register a pit bull in Montreal.

All dogs, including pit bull, must currently have up-to-date dog tags.

More details about registering animals can be found on the city of Montreal's website: ville.montreal.qc.ca/animals.
