Hema-Quebec is trying to reassure the public that its blood supply is safe following a quarantine of 3,000 units of the life-giving fluid.

After several dozen surgeries were cancelled on Thursday, Hema-Quebec said it has replenished the supply for every affected institution.

The agency said it has enough blood and plasma on hand to handle the province's needs for five days.

Laurent-Paul Menard of Hema-Quebec said the blood that was quarantined will be tested to ensure it is safe.

"If the tests show that there is no concern... and no contamination, well those products will be made available and will be put back into circulation," said Menard.

The blood services agency issued an emergency notice Wednesday night after discovering problems with several lots of bags used to contain blood and plasma.

The bags had small cracks, micro-fissures, that can theoretically allow viruses and bacteria to infect the stored blood.

Doctors are keeping a close watch on those who had already received products stored in the faulty bags but so far nobody has become sick.
