TORONTO - Prime Minister Harper and his government are being both praised and criticized in an editorial in The Economist, a mostly right-leaning British weekly magazine.
The Economist says the Harper government does not tolerate criticism or dissent.
And, it adds since becoming prime minister in early 2006, Harper has -- quote -- "acquired a reputation for playing fast and loose with the rules."
The editorial says the government's "bullying" ways could boost the opposition's popularity.
On the positive side, The Economist credits the Harper government for guiding a Canadian economy that "stands out from its peers" in terms of growth, unemployment, and reducing the deficit.
The editorial says Harper is his generation's most accomplished political tactician.
And, it adds polls show voters still consider Harper "a more impressive leader than his rivals."
