The provincial government has tabled a bill to protect whistleblowers.
Martin Coiteux, the president of the Treasury Board, introduced the legislation which would allow public employees to inform the provincial Ombudsman without fear of retaliation.
Under Bill 87 the ombudsman would investigate the complaint in the ministry or public agency, and then inform the leader of that group.
The legislation would also authorize a designated person in each agency to investigate and report to a person in authority.
The reports would be made public in cases where public health, safety, or the environment are at risk.
The Charbonneau Commission into corruption in the construction industry recommended more government protection for whistleblowers.
