The McGill football player involved in a criminal case that led to the resignation of the team’s football coach was in court Wednesday.

Luis Andres Guimont-Mota’s lawyer Steve Hanafi confirmed an injunction filed on behalf of his client to have the football player re-instated on the university football team.

The motion was denied in Superior Court.

The university’s lawyer argued that it wasn’t necessary for Guimont-Mota to play football in university in order to have a career in the CFL or professional football, as the CFL holds camps to recruit players.

Hanafi said they were not able to refute that given the urgency of the situation.

Guimont-Mota was suspended from the McGill Redmen football team last month after he was charged with assaulting his wife. He denies the charges.

McGill said through their lawyer that they do not want a player facing charges in their team.

Redmen head coach Clint Uttley stepped down in protest of the university's decision to suspend Guimont-Mota.
