In an effort to encourage more residents to recycle, the city of Montreal plans to distribute thousands of large, wheeled recycling bins in the majority of its boroughs this spring.
The 245,000 green bins are destined for buildings with eight housing units or less, said the city executive committee's vice-chair, Alan de Sousa.
De Sousa said the goal of the $16.8 million project is to make the city greener by getting people to recycle 70 per cent of recyclable material – up from the level of 53 per cent in 2008.
The bins, which are covered, come in three sizes: 360, 240 and 120 litres.
The city is also launching a recycling awareness campaign, while executing its distribution of the containers.
The project will unfold in two stages. Eleven boroughs will get the new recycling bins this year, while others will receive theirs in 2011.
