MONTREAL - The Montreal Canadiens have signed head coach Michel Therrien to a four-year contract extension.

General Manager Marc Bergevin made the announcement Saturday, saying that would so 50-year-old Therrien coach until the 2018-2019 season.

“Michel is an accomplished and experienced coach who has instilled a culture of hard work in our organization while helping develop our young players,” said Bergevin in a statement.

“Michel and his coaching staff work in a unique and demanding hockey market and the team's success over the last two seasons are a reflection of their excellent work. This decision reflects our desire for stability and consistency within our hockey operations department.”

Therrien has coached the Canadiens for the past two seasons, with a 75-42-13 record and bringing Montreal into the playoffs in both years.

He also coached the Canadiens for parts of the 2000-2003 seasons, and was 77-77-22-14 over that span.

His overall record in 320 regular season games as the Habs’ head coach include 152 wins, 119 losses and 49 ties or overtime losses.

Montreal was eliminated by the New York Rangers in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference final this season.

Therrien has coached close to 1,100 games in professional hockey in his career, including 592 games in the NHL and 501 in the American Hockey League.
