LAVAL – The only councillor to announce her candidacy became the new interim mayor of Laval Wednesday.

Martine Beaugrand has been Chomedey district councillor since 2009, and as she was sworn in, she also became the first woman to serve as mayor of Laval.

Beaugrand succeeds Alexandre Duplessis, who resigned last Friday over allegations implicating him in a case involving an escort service. He denies the allegations.

She will be the head of Laval’s city council, which was placed under trusteeship June 3. Municipal elections will be held Nov. 3.

Councillors who wanted the position had until late wednesday afternoon to submit their application.

Another councillor, France Dubreuil, was also approached, but Beaugrand was the only person interested.
