William and Léa were the most popular names for children born in Quebec in 2013, according to statistics released by the Regie des rentes du Quebec (RRQ).

William was given as a first name to 823 boys, while 625 girls were named Lea.

The next most popular girls’ names were: Emma, Olivia, Florence, Alice, Zoé, Rosalie, Juliette, Charlie et Chloé.

After William, the most popular names for boys were Nathan, Samuel, Alexis, Olivier, Felix, Thomas, Liam, Jacob and Gabriel.

It’s the second straight year that William and Nathan have ranked in the one and two positions.

Last year Emma was the most popular name for girls, with Lea ranking second.

The same statistics demonstrate that many once-common names in Quebec have fallen into disfavour.

Only four newborns were named Gilles. Guy (8) Roger (12 ), Claude (13) Jacques (21 ), Alain (21), Luke (39 ), Denis (40) Mario ( 52) and Peter (64) have also become considerably less popular monikers.

Girls’ names in decline include: Josée (4), Denise (6), Lise (6), France (6), Carole (7), Sylvie (8), Colette (9), Hélène (37), Linda (39) and Louise (48).
