A Montreal police officer caught on video threatening a homeless man has been found to have violated the force's code of ethics.

In January of last year, officer Pierre-Luc Gauthier was caught threatening to tie a homeless man to a pole in -35 degree Celsius weather.

The police ethics committee ruled that his words were "disrespectful and intimidating," and that his threat was "excessive" and "an abuse of power."

The committee will determine at a later date what sanctions the officer might face.
