Quebec's Chief Electoral Officer is retiring.

On Wednesday Jacques Drouin handed his resignation letter to Jacques Chagnon, the speaker of the National Assembly, saying he would like to finish his term on July 11, 2014.

In a written statement Drouin said he has served democracy with "enthusiasm and devotion" but it is now time for him to retire.

Drouin became chief electoral officer on Dec. 9, 2010 after spending many years working in the upper echelons of Elections Quebec.

He has been a civil servant for 36 years.
