MONTREAL--After a day of extreme weather in Southern Quebec, residents were being warned to seek shelter after a slew of tornado and thunderstorm warnings were issued throughout the day.
According to Environment Canada, an observer spotted a funnel cloud over Lake St-Louis at about 4:50 p.m. leading to a tornado warning for the Richelieu Valley and Saint-Hyacinthe. The funnel was heading east at over 70 km per hour but the warning expired after an hour.
A severe thunderstorm watch was also in effect for metro Montreal, Laval, Vaudreuil, Soulanges, Huntingdon, the Richelieu Valley and the Eastern Townships for most of the day. The thunderstorms were expected to generate gusts of wind of over 90 km per hour, hail balls over two centimeters in diameter, heavy rains and intense lightning.
An earlier downpour on Tuesday caused rivers of water to run through parts of Montreal. All warnings were lifted for Montreal just after 5:40 p.m.
