The first weekday of closures on the Montreal side of the Jacques-Cartier Bridge led to long delays for drivers coming into town.

The city of Montreal announced last week that it had to make emergency repairs to several water pipes at the corner of De Lorimier Ave. and De Maisonneuve Blvd. Those repairs began Friday evening and are expected to take until Dec. 20, 2012.

For the duration of the construction northbound traffic is barred from De Lorimier Ave. at Ste. Catherine St. Drivers can head east to Parthenais St. for a detour and come back over at Ontario St. Those coming off the bridge can still get onto De Lorimier Ave. as normal.

Two lanes southbound on De Lorimier are still open, although traffic has to veer left because of the roadwork, and drivers can still turn right on De Maisonneuve.

Likewise, two lanes on De Maisonneuve are closed for about half a block at the intersection with De Lorimier.

Police will often be onhand during the next three weeks to keep traffic flowing smoothly.
