The Quebec Federation of Labour, the province's largest union group, is asking drivers to boycott Shell Canada gas stations for 24 hours Friday to protest the company's decision to close a Montreal refinery.

In September, the east end refinery will be converted into a distribution terminal -- costing some 500 employees their jobs.

Friday's boycott was organized in an effort to show solidarity with the Shell refinery workers.

The union wants the company to go back to the negotiating table with two potential buyers for the refinery.

There were reports on Monday that Shell had indeed gone back to the table, but a company spokesman said that was untrue and the decision taken last week to close the refinery is final.
