Teenaged murder suspect Maor Attar has been found fit to stand trial for the first-degree murder of his sister.

14-year-old Shirel was beaten and stabbed to death in her Cote St. Luc home on August 9, 2010.

Her brother, 18-year-old Maor, was arrested later that night and charged with the crime, although he has been hospitalized at the Pinel Institute ever since.

Attar was present in the courthouse Friday morning, but was deemed not well enough to attend the day's hearing.

In court, a psychiatrist's report said that Attar is fit to stand trial, but that he has been recently diagnosed with schizophrenia and suffers from psychotic episodes.

Will pursue criminally insane defence

Attar's lawyer, Daniel Lighter, says he will continue to pursue an Article 16 defence, which is commonly referred to as a 'criminally insane' plea.

"Doctor Bouchard is a trained forensic psychiatrist from Pinel," said Lighter.

He said Attar "knows that he's charged, he knows that I'm a lawyer, he knows a judge is a judge and he's been charged with homicide."

At this point Attar is due back in court November 1.
