The former director of B'nai Brith's Quebec branch will find out at the end of March if he will go to trial on charges of possessing child pornography.

Bill Surkis, 69, was arrested last year after a computer repair shop notified police it found 15 kiddie porn videos on his computer.

The prosecution and defence agreed to return to court on March 31 to set a date for his preliminary inquiry.

Surkis' lawyer, Steven Slimovitch, says his client did download the illicit material, but claims it was for educational purposes for a presentation on child abuse.

"There is a clear reason why the Supreme Court of Canada has said there is a value in possessing kiddie porn for the teaching about how terrible it is. Mr Surkis is one of the largest promoters against child pornography," Slimovitch said.

The prosecution says it doesn't buy the educational defence, and insists on going to trial.
