TERREBONNE - After two days of examining the river and shore of the Mille Iles river, the Surete du Quebec has abandoned a search for the remains of Julie Surprenant.

Diver teams equipped with metal detectors spent Wednesday and Thursday walking in the shallow water not far from the 16-year-old's home.

She was last seen 12 years ago, stepping off a bus just metres from her home in Terrebonne, north of Montreal.

Earlier this year a nurse said she had heard a deathbed confession from the prime suspect in the case, Richard Bouillon, in 2006, but was legally barred from providing full details until she was compelled to do so by a coroner's inquest.

Officials say they wanted to wait until the information they received had been validated before devoting time and resources to a new, full-scale search.

However in the past two days they have found several items, but nothing seems to be related to Surprenant's disappearance.
