With students back from summer break, some teachers are concerned about the resources they'll have to educate them.

Quebec school boards say government cuts are forcing them to make tough choices.

The English Montreal School Board said its budget has been slashed by $3.8 million – but is trying not to cut any student services.

The EMBS will, however, consider cutting day care, special needs and other programs.

EMSB chair Angela Mancini said the school board had a budget prepared for this school year and was then forced to cut $3.8 million from it.

The school board plans to meet with its principals next week and try and decide where to cut.

Education Minister Yves Bolduc has come under fire for the cuts and comments he made last week about cutting libraries.

Bolduc told Le Devoir newspaper that children wouldn't die or stop reading if schools didn't purchase new books this year.

He has since apologized for the comments.

The Lester B. Pearson School Board is also facing $4 million in cuts, but said it has a $1.4 million surplus from last year to ease the blow.
