With the holiday season behind us, Recyc-Quebec is reminding Quebecers to recycle their Christmas trees.

Most municipalities will use the trees to make compost and mulch, while some cities in the Eastern Townships use the trees to manufacture natural oil, said government agency.

Trees must be stripped of all decorations and lights that adorned it during the holidays in order to be recycled.

Recyc -Quebec is also asking residents not to place their tree in a plastic bag but drop it on the sidewalk.

Montrealers can find borough specific information on the collection of Christmas trees on the City of Montreal website.

Last year, more than 20,000 Christmas trees were recovered on the island of Montreal.

The firs were turned into wood chips to fuel power plants of the company Boralex, said Recyc-Quebec.
