Montreal under rainfall, freezing rain warnings

Share

Southern Quebec could see a messy mix of rain and freezing rain beginning Tuesday night.

The Greater Montreal area is under a rainfall warning, with Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) forecasting between 30 and 40 millimetres of rainfall into Wednesday evening. The weather warning covers the Gatineau area to the Mauricie region, including Montreal.

The weather agency said an "intense" low pressure system is heading to the region. Since the ground is frozen, there could be significant amounts of water accumulating on roads.

"After that, temperatures are expected to drop overnight Wednesday night possibly leading to flash freezing of ponded water. Roads may become slippery, causing difficult travel conditions and transportation delays Thursday morning," Environment Canada said.

Shortly after 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, ECCC issued a freezing rain warning for the Montreal area.

"As temperatures are slow to rise above freezing, freezing rain or drizzle is expected this evening, giving up to 2 millimetres of ice accretion," the weather notice said, making for slippery roads and walkways, the warning reads.

"Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions."

The low on Tuesday is expected to hover around the freezing mark before it rises to around 6 C by Wednesday morning.

The forecast for Wednesday is calling for a high of 5 C with heavy rain. A mix of rain and snow is expected in the evening hours as the temperature falls back to 0 C.

There are other watches, special weather statements and warnings in effect across Quebec.

MOntreal and all areas in green are under a rainfall warning for Dec. 10-11, and a special weather statement is in effect for all areas in pink. The blue areas are freezing rain warnings.
