Quebec Solidaire wants to see plastic bags banned throughout the province.

The political party has launched a petition on the National Assembly website asking for the government to get rid of single-use plastic bags in all shops.

QS MNA Manon Masse, who launched the petition, said it is the result of an initiative created at the request of citizens.

Masse said the transition to a greener lifestyle requires a change in habits and the ban, along with other measures like improving public transport, is a gesture that can be made daily to reduce materials that end up in landfills and lessen Quebec’s reliance on oil products.

The MNA noted that as of Jan. 1, 2018, almost half of Quebec’s population would already be subject to plastic bag bans as the result of a measure adopted by the Montreal Metropolitan Community.

The public has until Nov. 29 to sign the petition.
