MONTREAL - Quebec Solidaire is troubled by the situation of French in the Quebec workplace.

The party reacted Saturday to the publication of several studies by the Office de la langue francaise which suggested that Quebec francophones could be in the minority in Montreal within 20 years.

Francoise David, spokesperson, for Quebec Solidaire said that the trend is nothing new and that the increase in the allophone population is alarming in the long-term, particularly if it means that if in 50 years only 20 percent of Montrealers speak French at home.

David also said that more immigrants are being told to speak English at work, whereas they were told they'd be speaking French when moving to the province.

She urged the OQLF to investigate and publish further studies on the language situation. She hopes the agency increases its presence in workplaces with more than 25 workers, where the French language charter should apply.

If a workplace functions in French, it increases the motivation of non-French speakers to learn the language, according to David.
