Sales at Quebec alcohol board (SAQ) outlets continued to decline in the second quarter. Once again, the opposite trend was observed in sales to wholesaler-grocers.

On Tuesday, the SAQ reported net earnings of $337.8 million for the second quarter ended Sept. 14. This represented an increase of $1.5 million, or 0.4 per cent, on the corresponding quarter last year.

Sales in dollars increased by 0.1 per cent year-on-year, to $946.7 million.

However, sales in the branch and specialized centre network continued to decline. Sales volume reached 45.3 million litres, down 1.3 million litres or 2.8 per cent.

“The downward trend in volumes, observed over the last seven quarters for this network, continues and can be explained in particular by changes in customer buying habits,” noted the Crown corporation in a press release.

The average value of the purchases at the checkout made by consumers also fell slightly, from $62.42 to $62.09, while the average selling price per litre increased slightly, from $20.41 to $20.67.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published in French on Dec. 10, 2024.
