Our Olympic athletes are doing us proud.
If the pictures of Chloe and Justine Dufour- Lapointe receiving their medals did not move you, then check your pulse.
But there are always idiots out there; they are the ones trying to make politics on the backs of the joy and success of others.
There is a photo of the sisters wearing their Canadian mittens and it’s pretty clear they are damn proud of them.
Now some deep thinker decided to Photoshop the picture of the girls, trading the maple leafs for the fleur de lys and it is making the rounds on social media.
The most offensive part is that our Minister of Higher Education Pierre Duchesne decided to retweet the photo. He said he didn’t know it was a Photoshop job.
A minister and former award-winning journalist was supposedly duped by a photo. Come on.
Now we have all the Canada-haters coming out of their holes claiming if Quebec were its own country it would lead Canada in medals.
Well it’s not that simple.
All athletes, whether they are from Quebec or PEI, benefit from national training programs.
They know they are part of something bigger than themselves and they don’t give a tinker's cuss about politics.
Our Minister of Higher Education should think twice before he tweets and perhaps have a little more respect.
Bernard Drainville: Minister and bully
Why is Bernard Drainville such a bully?
This week in public hearings, he demanded to know if the English Montreal School Board would be prepared to ignore the Charter of Values and engage in civil disobedience.
I guess memories are short because that’s precisely what the PQ did in encouraging protesting students two years ago.
Why go after Anglo educators? Because Anglos and minorities are such a thorn in the side to the PQ.
All Angela Mancini, chair of the EMSB, did was point out is that the Charter of Values is likely illegal.
"What we would like to do and we represent our community is to go forward and to take any recourse necessary to ensure that we are not going to be applying this particular law to our school board," said Mancini.
Parizeau is right on the economy
The PQ knows its Charter would not stand a snowball's chance in hell before the courts and it is dismissing everyone who points that out as an enemy of the state.
I don’t think Jacques Parizeau and I could agree on the day of the week, but the former premier and now thorn in the side to the PQ had some wise words this week.
This is what he wrote.
““For the first time in 30 years, I am worried about Quebec’s economic future.”
He is right. Quebec is losing jobs; there are fewer and fewer opportunities. Try to find a decent job in Montreal these days.
Yet Madame Marois speaks of prosperity under the PQ. That is nothing but nonsense.
The PQ may not the only reason we are heading down a hole, but it’s making matters much worse.
This government is engaging in pork barrel politics and is spending money it doesn’t have.
Case in point, a $400 million cement factory in the Gaspé, which she acknowledged was a thank-you for voting PQ in the last election.
We will soon be in another election campaign and the economy must become the central issue.
Quebec lost almost 70,000 full-time jobs last year.
The other stuff --language, identity and separation -- are red herrings.
To borrow a phrase from Bill Clinton’s presidential campaign in 1992: it is the economy stupid.
