MONTREAL - Police are investigating after a five-week-old baby boy was pronounced dead Sunday morning after suffering respiratory distress.

Paramedics arrived at the scene and tried to revive the newborn child at an apartment at 1000 Lawlor St. in St. Laurent at about 7:30 a.m.

He was then transported to hospital, where he was pronounced dead, said Montreal police Const. Olivier Lapointe.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.

Four people were in the apartment at the time of the incident, including the boy's parents, both in their 20s and the child's aunt and grandmother.

The major crimes unit is investigating, as is customary in the sudden death of an infant.

No one is being treated as a suspect in the child's death.
