DOLLARD-DES-ORMEAUX - A 31-year-old man is dead after a Porsche convertible veered off the road and struck a stop sign in Dollard-des-Ormeaux late Friday night.
The incident occurred at 11:45, on an industrial stretch of Brunswick Blvd. near Montrose St., said police.
“It seems that the 48-year-old driver lost control of his car going eastbound on Brunswick, hit a sign post and the passenger that was on the right side was injured. He was declared dead on scene,” said Daniel Lacoursiere of the Montreal police.
The driver was taken to hospital to treat minor injuries.
He was later arrested and faces charges relating to alleged speeding and drinking.
“Our investigation led us to accuse the 48-year-old driver for reckless driving causing death and impaired driving causing death,” said Lacoursiere.
Police are waiting on blood samples of validate the accusations.
Accident reconstructionists spent hours at the scene investigating.
It’s not clear how the two men knew each other, or where they were headed.
Theresa-Anne Kramer from Mothers Against Drunk Driving said these kind of crashes are all too common.
“Impaired driving is the number one criminal cause of death in our country. At the end of today, four homes (in Canada) are going be visited by police officers who say, ‘I have terrible news for you,’” she said
Her advice this Halloween weekend:
“Plan ahead, have your designated driver, plan to stay where you are or stay at a friend house close by where you can just walk,” she said.
