MONTREAL - The wife of Arthur Porter learned at the Montreal courthouse Thursday that she will have to wait until Tuesday to find out whether she will be granted her freedom pending trial.
Pamela Mattock Porter has been detained since her arrest in Panama in late May and has stayed behind bars in Montreal after her extradition to Canada on June 14.
Pamela Porter, who is married to former MUHC director Arthur Porter, is suspected of helping her husband launder $22 million.
She sported jogging pants and a t-shirt Thursday as she spoke before the judge.
Two police officers also addressed the court and the crown prosecutor argued that she is a flight risk and should not be released on bail.
The evidence that was submitted at the hearing on Thursday is subject to a publication ban.
The hearing began at 11 a.m. as lawyers for the Crown and defence went over the facts of the case and the evidence collected. She is accused of conspiring with her husband, who currently sits in a Panama jail cell while he fights extradition, in a scheme to collect bribes from construction firms.
In order for Pamela Porter to be refused bail, the Crown has to prove that Porter is considered a flight risk, and according to CTV's Stephane Giroux that is where the nature of her co-accused comes into play.
Several high-profile people were also arrested in connection with the case. They include former SNC-Lavalin president Pierre Duhaime and vice-president Riahd Ben Aissa and Porter's assistant Yanai Elbaz. They've all obtained bail in exchange for amounts between $50,000 and $100,000 each.
