MONTREAL - One man, aged 24, is dead, while a woman of the same age is in critical condition following separate road accidents in the Montreal area Thursday evening.
The young man died after his vehicle hit a lamppost on Provencher near Colbert in St. Leonard at about 10:30 p.m Thursday.
His vehicle collided with several parked cars prior to smashing into the lamppost.
Police believe that excess speed might have caused the crash.
The other accident took place on Highway 440 westbound in Laval at 10:15 p.m. Thursday when a 36-year-old drunk driver stopped his car and turned off his lights in the middle of the highway.
An oncoming car, driven by a 24-year-old woman, proved unable to avoid the stationary vehicle.
The car flipped several times upon impact and hit another car, whose driver was not seriously injured.
The woman was brought to hospital where she was treated for a series of injuries, including head trauma.
The driver of the stopped car was arrested for impaired driving and obstructing police. He was not seriously injured in the collision.
The highway was closed for much of the night before reopening to traffic shortly before 5 a.m.
