OPP remind motorists to use cautious driving near snowplows

Motorists in northern Ontario are being asked to exercise caution when driving near snowplows on highways across the region.

According to a recent Ontario Provincial Police news release, snow-plow operators are reporting an increase in dangerous driving behaviours, including vehicles following too closely or making dangerous passing attempts, particularly when the plows are in an echelon formation.

“A leading cause of collisions that occur during the winter months is poor driving, not poor driving conditions,” said police.

“There is no excuse for dangerous or distracted driving.”

OPP reminded all drivers that road safety is a shared responsibility and should be a priority every time anyone is in the driver’s seat.

Officers provided the following reminders for safe winter driving:

• Stay focused on the road, other vehicles and eliminate all distractions.
• Slow down, stay alert, and stay in control.
• Adjust your driving to current road and weather conditions and leave extra space between vehicles, as stopping distances are more than double on snow or ice-covered roads.

Police said these simple steps will go a long way in reducing the number of winter weather-related collisions.

OPP are asking members of the public to contact them at 1-800-310-1122 or their local police service if they observe drivers operating motor vehicles – including passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, ATVs or snowmobiles – in a dangerous manner.

“All road users are reminded to be patient when encountering plows and to never attempt to pass when plows are working in formation,” said police.

“Give plows the space they need to clear the roads safely.”
