With the New Year comes higher fares for Montreal public transit users.

Prices for commuter rail passes went up by just under two percent, while fee hikes also took effect for STM users on Jan. 1.

A monthly bus pass now costs $70, an increase of $1.50.

The price of a reduced-fare monthly pass has climbed by $1.75, to $38.75.

A single trip in cash remains the same at $2.75.

The STM calls the changes for monthly passes "a reasonable fare increase".

In a statement published on its website, the STM said it offers transit users superior service at a low cost.

"When compared to 26 other metro networks around the world, the Montreal metro is the most productive in the world, and, with its fares being among the lowest, its is recognized as offering excellent value."
