Commuters needed to budget plenty of extra time to get out of LaSalle on Monday morning as they adjusted to a new traffic configuration.

Following this weekend's construction, Angrignon Blvd. over the Lachine Canal is now operating with just one alternating lane in each direction.

After crossing the canal, drivers on Angrigon are now diverted several hundred metres to the west and then back east before they can access Highway 20 in either direction, or if they want to get to NDG.

Police officers were controlling the traffic lights on Monday morning, often leaving one direction with a green light for minutes at a time. They tended to do this when 18-wheeler trucks were using the street, since those vehicles need more space.

When only cars were using the overpass, police were allowing traffic to flow in both directions simultaneously.

The temporary configuration will last for about the next year.
