The diagnostic guide used by North American psychiatrists has been rewritten to eliminate Asperger's syndrome.

Nathalie Garcin, the executive director of the The Gold Learning & Research Centre, says that the American Psychiatric Association has decided to do away with the five distinct categories of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

"The A.P.A. actually on their website said trying to come up with distinct categories was like trying to cleave meatloaf at the joints," said Garcin.

Medical professionals will now classify all Autism spectrum disorders under three broader categories based on how much support the individual requires.

"The issue is that it was almost impossible to distinguish between a person with high functioning autism and a person with Asperger syndrome," said Garcin.
