MONTREAL - Construction on Montreal's new English superhospital has just become a lot noisier.
Workers have begun driving large steel piles deep into the bedrock in Glen Yards to support the buildings.
The pile driving begins every weekday at 7 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m.
It will continue until February.
Yanai Elbaz of the McGill University Health Centre says they have taken steps to limit the noise so that neighbours won't be disturbed.
"So far, we did receive some complaints, but not many complaints," he said during a tour of the site on Monday.
After a decade of delays and negotiations, work on the hospital appears to be on schedule.
About 65 per cent of the site in NDG has now been excavated.
The first part of the 500 single-patient room medical facility is expected to open in 2014, and cost approximately $1.34 billion.
Earlier this year the provincial government announced that a consortium led by SNC-Lavalin and Innisfree Ltd. will build the 300,000 square metre project.
Once completed, there will be space to treat 346 adults in individual rooms, and a children's hospital with capacity for 154 patients.
The land will be extensively landscaped, with a park and pond built on the site.
