The Plateau Mont-Royal borough has found a new use for its fire hydrants.

It has unveiled a system that turns them into water fountains.

There are currently two of them in the borough: one at the corner of Mont-Royal and St-Laurent Blvd. and another at de Brébeuf St. and Mont-Royal Ave. The 53-inch metal rings will move to various hydrants around the Plateau throughout the summer.

They are thanks to the so-called Borneo system, created by five local designers.

The borough paid $5,000 for the two fountains, and says it could help cut down on water bottles, fight heat waves, and provide access to drinking water for the city’s homeless population.

The fire hydrants can still be accessed by the fire department in emergencies.
