The EMSB tabled its budget on Tuesday night, but despite recording a surplus, some parents and teachers aren’t happy.

Citing austerity measures that they say will affect student services, they say they will ramp up demonstrations if the EMSB doesn’t streamline its administration and invest more into students. Changes in senior management will cost the board more than $300,000 this year.

The surplus was the result of $13 million in profit from adult education services and the sale of four buildings, but according to  Peter Mercuri, who heads the EMSB’s central parents committee, that isn’t enough.

“That's one time, so what happens next year? or the year after that?” he said. ”In the past 5 years we've already seen $20 million worth of budget cuts. What's next?”
