A patient who arrived from Africa suffering from a fever does not meet the criteria for exposure to Ebola, Montreal’s public health agency has confirmed.
Montreal Health and Social Services Agency spokesperson Deborah Bonney said a patient was admitted to a Montreal hospital exhibiting symptoms.
As a precaution, the hospital placed the patient in isolation and sent samples to a Winnipeg lab for analysis.
The results are not in yet, but Bonney said the patient did not meet the criteria for exposure to Ebola.
The hospital took the steps simply as a precaution.
Symptoms of the Ebola virus include high fever, headache, joint and muscle pains, sore throat, weakness, stomach pain and lack of appetite.
The virus is highly contagious and transmitted through body fluids.
The Ebola outbreak currently involves four countries: Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Nigeria.
As of Aug. 9, WHO confirmed 1,848 cases of Ebola, 1,013 of which were fatal.
Public health officials are relying on standard infection control practices and quarantines to try and contain the outbreak. Canada is also donating up to 1,000 doses of an experimental Ebola vaccine to West Africa.
