A hotel in Brossard caught fire early Wednesday morning.

The fire broke out at the Econolodge hotel on Taschereau Blvd. around 6:30 a.m. with flames visible from blocks away and a cloud of smoke that was seen for kilometres.

Dozens of firefighters rushed to the hotel and ensured that everyone made it out safely.

Less than two hours later the fire was extinguished and the damage was extensive. Much of the roof of the two-storey building was gone, and windows and doors are both floors were showing signs of damage.

About two dozen tourists from China were in the hotel at the time. They were given shelter in a bus and should be allowed into the building to retrieve their belongings later in the day.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
