A two-year-old boy was hit by a car in Cote des Neiges Thursday afternoon.

Around 4:30 p.m., the child was with his mother leaving a daycare when he suddenly broke away and ran into traffic, said an eyewitness.

“She was folding the stroller and he began running,” she said.

That's when a white car heading east on Mackenzie St. near Cote des Neiges Rd. struck the boy.

“The mother's screaming alerted everyone to what had happened,” the woman said.

The child was brought to hospital. His life is not in danger.

As the mother ran to rescue her child, witnesses say they watched as the driver kept going.

A 36-year-old man was driving the car, police say. He allegedly left the scene but returned shortly after the incident occurred.

Police arrested the man and plan to question him. The man driver is cooperating with police.

As of late Thursday, and there was no word as to whether the man will be charged.

A friend of the driver told CTV News his friend might not have realized what happened at first.

"He was coming home from work and suddenly he heard people screaming," the friend said, adding the driver claims he never saw the boy.

There are several daycares located on Mackenzie, and on the street many parents find the speed limit should be reduced to 30 kilometers an hour.

“They should slow (down) because there are lots of kids around this area,” one parent said.
