MONTREAL -- A bail hearing will be held next month for the man charged in Quebec's 2012 election-night shooting.
Marcel Guerin, the lawyer for Richard Henry Bain, said Friday his client will be among the witnesses who are expected to testify.
Quebec Superior Court Justice Guy Cournoyer has set aside two-and-a-half days for the bail hearing, beginning July 29.
Guerin said his client has provided him with some names of potential witnesses, but the lawyer told reporters he only met his client Thursday to discuss the bail hearing.
"I don't know where we're going," Guerin said. "We need witnesses . . . . I don't know who (and) you'll know more on the 29th."
Bain is charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder after an attack at a Montreal club on Sept. 4, 2012, as then Parti Quebecois leader Pauline Marois celebrated her party's election as a minority government.
Lighting technician Denis Blanchette was fatally shot and colleague David Courage was wounded as they stood near a doorway to the downtown Metropolis nightclub where Marois was giving her speech.
Guerin indicated that Marois will not be called by the defence to testify at the hearing because he says the case has nothing to do with her.
"It has to do with the Metropolis, but he's not accused of anything (involving) Pauline Marois."
Bain also faces several weapons charges as well as some relating to arson in the same incident.
During his latest court appearance, Bain again complained to the judge about his conditions while in detention. He was upset with prison authorities for opening his mail, notably messages that he sent to the judge.
Guerin said Bain was advised by Cournoyer that if he wanted to communicate with the judge, he should do so through his lawyer.
Bain's trial is set to start on Jan. 19, 2015.
