A 16-year-old boy is in hospital in serious condition after being struck by a train in Dorval early on Sunday morning.

Police said the boy was trying to jump onto a moving train at 1:30 a.m., fell off the train and was hit by it again on the tracks.

The conductor of that train was able to stop the vehicle and bring medical aid, who was rushed to hospital with serious injuries to his head. SPVM spokesperson Jean-Pierre Brabant said the boy's condition was later listed as stable and police didn't fear for his life.

"He was in serious condition, with major trauma," said Urgences Sante head of operations Benoit Garneau.

Police said they are still investigating why the boy was trying to jump onto the train. It's unclear how the boy got onto the tracks or if he was alone at the time.

"We've met with the driver of the train, we have his deposition and information, but we'll wait until the teenager gets better in hospital so we can meet him and clarify some of the information we have," said Brabant.

Dorval Mayor Edgar Rouleau said while accidents involving trains in Dorval are rare, "one is too many."

"We have deaths years ago, teenagers went across," he said. "It's difficult for railroads and everybody to make sure it never happens. I encourage kids not to play, it's not a playground. We have parks, everyone should go to the parks."
