MONTREAL - Gunshots rang out Friday night at 9:20 p.m. at the corner of Milton and des Erables, as a man was shot dead in Ville St. Pierre, a part of the Borough of Lachine.
Montreal police are reporting that the young male victim was brought to hospital after being found lying on the street after being hit by several bullets, but he was pronounced dead at 10:08 p.m.
Police said that at least two suspects were seen fleeing the scene on what's sometimes known as Devil's Hill but did not immediately offer any descriptions.
Police quickly set up a security perimeter and Major Crimes detectives have started investigating the scene and interviewing witnesses.
The victim was identified by police only as a 22-year-old black male.
One nearby resident, who asked that to go nameless, told CTV Montreal that there were six shots fired, two shots, followed by a series of four more shots a few seconds later.
The same resident said that neighbours are reporting that two possible suspects fled in a black Dodge Charger.
Police have been on full-alert in recent days as the city has been rocked by a series of street-gang-related murders, but there is no information as of yet tying this incident to any other killings.
The shooting occurred 100 metres south of a traffic barrier erected by Montreal West to block traffic between the two neighbourhods.
The new barrier left that section of Ville St. Pierre area area geographically isolated and was unsuccessfully opposed by the Lachine borough but was allowed to stand in a Superior Court decision handed down January 2008.
