A man was shot and injured across the street from a daycare in Longueuil, and the suspect is at large.

Longueuil police (SPAL) said that gunshots were reported around 4:15 a.m. on Thursday on Beauregard Street near Ste-Helene Street on Montreal's South Shore.

The Ma Licorne daycare centre is on that corner.

“This location is known to police, and the two men are said to know each other,” the SPAL said.

Police told CTV News that they raid the building yearly.

The man in his 40s was hit in the lower body and took refuge in an apartment. He was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A man in his 20s is suspected in the shooting and fled on foot.

A crime scene perimeter is in place and the investigation is ongoing.
