QUEBEC - The Quebec government is cracking down on illegal daycares, and the Liberals are promising greater transparency around how daycare licenses are awarded.

Family Minister Yolande James introduced a new law Thursday that will limit the number of children that any one company can look after.

The proposed legislation will also double the fines for anyone caught operating outside the law.

Currently there is no limit on the number of permits, or the number of children than any one company can look after.

Under the legislation, individuals and those related to them will only be allowed to operate five daycare centres.

The maximum number of spaces in those centres will be capped at 300.
