Hundreds of mourners packed a funeral home on Friday to say their final goodbyes to a 14-year-old girl.

An entire community took part in laying Shirel Attar to rest, after she was beaten and stabbed to death on Monday.

Many who attended Friday's service were stunned by the death.

"People are trying to understand what happened here," said Sarah Raskin after the service took place.

Shirel attended Marymount High School, and her former teachers and classmates arrived in droves to pay their respects.

Brother charged with first-degree murder

Shirel's 18-year-old brother Maor has been charged with first-degree murder, and Maor's classmates have risen to his defence, saying he was someone who would not hurt a fly, let alone murder his younger sister.

"I couldn't believe it, not from him, not coming from him," said Ingrid Cohen. "He was great, always smiling, always happy with us."

On Monday evening, Maor was found by police one block away from the family home, and was taken to hospital and treated for injuries that police said might be self-inflicted.

Maor was released from hospital on Thursday.

His next scheduled court appearance is on September 8.
