One man is dead and two others injured after a head-on crash at the western edge of the town of Lachute.

The Surete du Quebec said it appears one driver veered out of his lane and hit an oncoming car. A third car was also damaged.

The driver of the car that was struck, a 23-year-old man, died. The driver of the car that was in the wrong lane was badly hurt but is expected to survive. A passenger in that car was also injured.

The collision happened around 2 a.m. on Highway 50 near the interchange with route 327.

At that point the road is one lane in each direction, and with no street lighting. Police said one possibility is that a car was driving without working headlights
