Freezing rain coming to Montreal, smog warning remains in effect

Share

As the smog warning continues in Montreal, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued a special weather statement on Friday, warning that freezing rain may be on the way as the weather warms.

The statement says that a “major weather system” from the southern U.S. may hit Quebec on Sunday, affecting the Montreal, Laval, Vaudreuil and Quebec City regions.

"A period of freezing drizzle or rain may affect the Saint Lawrence Valley from Saturday evening until Sunday," the statement notes. "Later on, significant rainfall amounts and melting snow are expected through Monday."

While temperatures are forecast to remain below freezing, hovering around -10 degrees Celsius on Friday and -5 degrees Celsius on Sunday, it is expected to push past freezing to three degrees Celsius on Sunday and eight degrees Celsius on Monday.

As a result, roadways, walkways and parking lots are expected to be slippery and "ponding of water may occur on roads or in low-lying areas."

The smog warning that was issued on Thursday remains in place in Montreal, Laval and other areas.
