Transport Quebec (MTQ) said on Tuesday that there will be no change to the lane configuration on the Ile-aux-Tourtes Bridge between the Island of Montreal and Vaudreuil-Dorion before the end of the year.

The MTQ hoped to open a fourth lane before the end of 2024, but "some bridge girders have continued to deteriorate in the Senneville sector,” the MTQ said in a news release.

“So, before another lane can be safely reopened, the shoring work underway since last summer must be sufficiently advanced,” the transport ministry said in a news release Tuesday. “In short, work must first be completed on both sides of one of the two piers under construction.”

The ministry said it is trying to open the fourth lane as quickly as possible, but that the complex work involved requires the delay.

Two lanes will be open in peak hours in one direction and one lane in the other. There are discounts on public transportation options on and off the island.

The MTQ expects the fourth lane to be open by the end of the winter.

Quebec announced in 2018 that a new Ile-aux-Tourtes Bridge would be built. Construction continues on the new bridge, while the old one is being repaired.
